European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) Growth Programme

European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) Growth Programme provides grants for small businesses of any sector who are based in rural areas, food processing and small-scale tourism infrastructure and tourism cooperation projects.

To be eligible you must be in a defined 'rural area' . Enter your postcode on the Government's interactive map and on Contents tab, select 'Administrative boundaries tab' and  'Rural Areas'.

As general guidance, the vast majority of Staffordshire Moorlands is classified as rural excluding Biddulph & Knpersley town centres to west; Brown Edge, Werrington, Blythe Bridge and Forsbrook (village centres) and Cressbrook Industrial estate. All of Cheadle and Leek town centres are classified as rural due to their function as a service centre for the wider rural area.

Who can apply?

  • Small Businesses looking to grow: Micro and small businesses in a rural area, including social enterprises. Farmers wanting to diversify into non-agricultural activities
  • Food processing firms: Micro, small and medium-sized food-processing businesses processing Annex 1 products (examples include meat, milk, grain and root vegetables)
  • Small scale tourism infrastructure: Rural businesses and rural communities, farmers and land owners
  • Tourism cooperation: Businesses in a rural area. Charities, public bodies, community groups and destination organisations operating in a rural area

Funding is normally at 40% of total costs for business projects (can be up to 80% for toursim infrastructure), mimimum grant £35,000 - maximum is normally £170,000 but can be up to £0.5m
