Managing Legionella during the Coronavirus pandemic

The temporary closure of businesses and business premises means there is a risk of Legionella - the bacteria that can cause a type of pneumonia called Legionnaire's Disease - developing in dormant water systems.

Business owners, landlords and property managers need to be aware of this risk and take action to minimise this risk now including:

  • Carrying out a risk assessment to reflect current water system usage
  • Weekly flushing of water systems
  • Draining and disinfecting water systems in buildings which will remain unused for a long period of time
  • Keeping documentation up-to-date and ready for inspection

There's more advice and guidance at:

Health and Safety Executive

Legionella Control Association

European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease on managing Legionella in building water systems

Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group for premises such as swimming pools, spas and other leisure facilities

When restrictions are lifted and before you re-open to the public you will need to:

  • Disinfect all water systems and flush through to the furthest outlets for at least an hour
  • Reheat the system to at least 60c then turn on taps, showers etc  to flush through thoroughly
