Moorlands to join Queen's 90th birthday celebrations

Staffordshire Moorlands will be joining over 1,000 communities across the UK and overseas in lighting a beacon in celebration of the Queen's 90th birthday later this month.

The Queen will light the principal beacon at Windsor Castle on Thursday 21 April and this will be followed by the lighting of beacons up and down the UK and in overseas territories.

In the Moorlands the beacon will be lit at 8.30pm on the night at Flash - England's highest village.

The tradition of lighting beacons for big occasions is now well established with the Queen lighting the principal beacon to mark the Silver Jubilee in 1977, the Golden Jubliee in 2002 and the Diamond Jubliee in 2012, as well as for the Millenium celebrations in 1999, the 50th and 70th anniversaries of VE Day in 1995 and 2015 and during Trafalgar Weekend in 2005.
