Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
What we can and can't recycle
We can recycle...
Plastic pots, tubs and trays
- pots (e.g. yoghurt, soup)
- tubs (e.g. ice cream, spreadable butter)
- trays (e.g. raw meat, fruit and vegetable trays)
- remove any film lids and absorbent pads in the bottom of the tray and put these in your general rubbish - chocolate and biscuit tubs
Plastic bottles
Clear and coloured plastic bottles from around the home, including
- day to day cleaning product bottles (e.g. bathroom cleaners, washing up liquid, bleach)
- cosmetics bottles (e.g. shampoo, shower gel)
- trigger sprays are ok to leave on but please remove soap pumps and put these in your general rubbish as they are not currently recyclable - drinks bottles (e.g. juice, squash, milk, fizzy drinks)
Please remember
- rinse food packaging - left over food residue can contaminate other recyclables
- empty and rinse bottles, squash and replace the lid or top
- if bottles contain liquid they might not be recycled as they go through an automated process and the extra weight stops the bottle being pushed into the correct recycling stream. Liquid can also damage the machinery and contaminate other recyclables
- bottles can be squashed to give more space in your recycling bin - labels and bottle caps can all be left on but plastic film must be removed and put in the general rubbish bin
- separate any cardboard or paper from plastic packaging
We can't recycle - put these in your general rubbish bin
- black plastic - sorting equipment can't detect the colour black and it is not recycled
- crisp packets and sweet wrappers
- film lids from pots or trays
- plastic toys
- laminated pouches (e.g. cat food or baby food pouches that spring back when you try to scrunch them) they are are not currently recyclable
- medicine packs
- toothpaste tubes
- expanded polystyrene e.g. takeaway trays, coffee cups or protective packaging
- plastic bottles containing chemicals (e.g. antifreeze)
- strong chemicals that are poisonous are hazardous to staff and can damage recycling equipment. Check the bottle for disposal instructions.
We can't collect but check for recycling at supermarkets
- carrier bags or plastic wrapping film e.g. bread bags and bubble wrap
