Leek in the running for Britain's greatest high street
Lovers of Leek are hoping its blend of independent shops, popular high street names and bustling traditional and specialist markets will see it crowned a Great British High Street.
It's High Streets Week from 16 - 22 July and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is celebrating by entering the town into the government-led awards scheme aimed at recognising the contribution our high streets make to the life and vibrancy of our towns and cities.
Council Leader, Councillor Sybil Ralphs, said: "Leek is the ideal candidate for these awards - our local retailers, businesses and Council-run markets are leading the way when it comes to making sure our high streets remain vibrant and attractive places to shop, eat and enjoy leisure time with family and friends.
"We're proud of our thriving town centre and we want to celebrate that by entering these awards which will, hopefully, build on the success we achieved when Leek was named runner-up in the Telegraph's high street awards a couple of years ago.
"So we're encouraging everyone to show their support for our traders and hospitality businesses by supporting our bid and continuing to really make the most of what is right here on their doorstep."
The awards will not only recognise the best high streets across the nation but will also champion 'rising stars' by shining a light on great examples of who high streets can meet the challenges of a changing environment and sharing top tips for success.
The shortlisted entries - 26 in the Champion High Street Category and 12 rising stars - will be announced in October and will go to a public vote and be visited by a judging panel.
Britain's best high street will be announced in November with the winner receiving a £10,000 cash prize for a local community project.
