Pupils recycle famous names for new waste vehicles
Published on 19 October 2021
Primary school pupils from across the Moorlands took famous faces and other well-known vehicles as their inspiration when they were asked to help name the new fleet of waste and recycling collection vehicles.
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and its waste partner Alliance Environmental Services have invested in 18 new vehicles featuring engines which reduce harmful pollutants and state-of-the-art technology including better fuel management, electric bin lifts and an in-cab screen to monitor hazards.
Primary classes across the District were asked to submit their suggestions for names for the vehicles and, after shortlisting, bin crews then voted for their favourites.
And famous faces and vehicles proved inspirational for many children with winning names including Dustbin Bieber, Greta Binberg. Lighting McClean and Lambergreenie.
Councillor Sav Scalise, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: "Increasing recycling and reducing waste are beneficial ways we can all help to protect our environment so asking young people to name our new vehicles is a great way of raising awareness and engaging them in waste services.
"This new fleet improves the way in which we deliver these services and helps to reduce our carbon footprint too. We had some fantastic ideas for names and it was a tough job to narrow them down to the eventual winners.
"Thanks to all the schools who took part. The winning names are now displayed on the front of the vehicles so do look out for them when our crews are out and about collecting."
The winning schools all received vouchers to spend on school resources.
The full list of winning names is: Lightning McClean; Lambergreenie; Bin Diesel; Litter Mix; The Waste Warrior; Rubbish-o-saurus Rex; Babs the Bin Lorry; Dustin Bieber; Pippa the Tippa; Binderella; Bob; Bangers and Trash; Trashic Park; Trash Bandicoot; Numpty Dumpty; The Green Machine; Greta Binberg and Recycle Rocker.
