Cheadle Market, which has long been a consideration for Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, in view of its strategic position on the High Street and the opportunity this might give to regenerating the town centre, has been bought by the Council today.
It follows the market coming up for sale in a live auction. A price of £260,000 has been agreed.
The purchase of the market has been a core ambition of the Council's and so it is delighted to have been successful in the auction. It is central to plans to raise the profile of Cheadle and grow the local economy in partnership with stakeholders, businesses, traders and residents. A thriving market at the heart of the town will be a great asset and a key contribution to a vibrant future for Cheadle.
SMDC had allocated an amount of funding for the purchase should it have been able to bid successfully, and will be drawing on that money as it proceeds to complete the acquisition in the coming days.
This is clearly great news for Cheadle and also follows on from the wishes of SMDC's previous administration's ambitions for the town.
SMDC will now be completing all the transactional and legal requirements, and will spend time reviewing the new asset, before taking a long and hard look at how it makes the most of this important purchase for the town.
