Benefits overpayments

What to do if you've been paid too much housing benefit

What happens if you've been paid too much, how to repay, and what to do if you can't afford to pay.

Overpayments usually happen if you are paid more benefit than you are entitled to. You must tell us if your circumstances change.

If you've been overpaid

We'll write to you to let you know.

If you are still getting benefit, we will usually reduce your benefit each week until the overpayment has been paid back.  The letter you receive will tell you how much we are planning to take out and when the deductions will start.

If you're no longer receiving benefit from us, you will be sent an invoice for the amount you need to pay back.

How to pay

You will need your invoice number for both methods of payment.

Or call 0300 456 2763 to make a payment.

What if I can't pay?

If you can't pay the amount asked, get in touch with us to make a payment arrangement.
