People who are disregarded for council tax

Council tax is based on the number of people living in a property. If you're 'disregarded' this means that we don't count you. If you live with someone who isn't counted it may mean that you get a discount on your bill.

People who are disregarded include:

• people caring for someone with a disability, who is not a partner, or child under 18
• people who have a severe mental impairment
• people aged 18 and 19 years, who are at, or who have just left school
• members of visiting forces and certain international institutions
• members of religious communities (monks and nuns)
• people in prison (except those in prison for non-payment of council tax, or a fine)
