Brough Park Leisure Centre Redevelopment Project
Information about the Brough Park Leisure Centre Health and Wellbeing Hub Redevelopment Project
Brough Park Leisure Centre is now closed for work on a £17 million redevelopment project to take place. The facilities are being upgraded and expanded to engage more people in physical activity and positive lifestyle choices and the centre will re-open in early 2026.
Whilst this fantastic upgrade is being completed many existing user groups and clubs have already been moved or guaranteed slots at the Council's other leisure centres in Biddulph and Cheadle. Members of Brough Park Leisure Centre who continue their current membership will have use of the Biddulph Valley and South Moorlands Leisure Centres and be able to access the gym, swimming, squash and classes at those centres.
Many of the extremely successful group exercise classes currently running at Brough Park have transferred to Birchall Pavilion where a wide range of classes remains on offer, including Zumba, Body Pump, Yoga, Pilates and Indoor Cycle sessions. You can view the timetable below.

New memberships for people who only want to attend the classes at Birchall Pavilion are available for a fee of £25 per month. For further information, please speak to the team.
People with children taking part in swimming lessons have the option to switch these to either Biddulph, Cheadle or Buxton - just make contact with the team and they will discuss the most suitable options with you.
The redevelopment
The new facilities include:
Swimming Pool Facilities
Demolition of the existing swimming pool facilities and rebuild to create a new 25 metre, 6 lane pool as well as a larger teaching pool that will have a range of flexible uses. New changing facilities will be provided including group and family changing and a dedicated 'changing places' facility to support people with disabilities and additional needs.
Health and Fitness Facilities
Health and fitness facilities will also be extended to include a larger gym and second group exercise studio, a new, dedicated, indoor cycling studio and a community wellness suite which would provide space to expand referral based services, with a focus on supporting different health conditions with specialist equipment and instructors.
Adventure/Soft Play Facilities
Adjoining the new main reception area, we hope to provide an indoor soft/adventure play facility, offering a range of activities for children, in a fun and interactive environment.
Social Spaces
Plans also include a new reception space overlooking both swimming pools with associated toilet facilities serving the centre and wider park, along with café seating and servery.
Outside Spaces
We are also keen to enhance the outdoor areas adjacent to the leisure centre, to make the facility more welcoming and engaging. Thanks to everyone who shared their views about this. The landscape developer will take the comments we received into consideration when designing a proposal which we will share with you when available. Once agreed, the plans will be delivered as part of the overall redevelopment project.

Public Involvement
In spring 2024 we carried out public consultation on the proposed designs for improving internal and external spaces at the centre.
Thank you to everyone who took part in that exercise. We received over 340 comments - view the PDF below to see which elements of the plans we received comments on.
Consultation results (PDF) [41KB]
All the comments, suggestions and concerns we received were carefully reviewed and considered and have played a crucial role in shaping the final plans to ensure that the leisure centre is a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.
The main issues raised during the consultation related to spectator seating for people watching and supporting children in swimming lessons, particularly those children who may be young and lack confidence, and seating for swimming galas and events which would take place in the main pool.
To address these issues within the available budget and building footprint, the Council worked with its professional design team and architects - and a selection of different seating options will now be provided at both pools.
Tip-up seating at the teaching pool will provide viewing directly on poolside to complement the café seating which will be behind glazing. These seats will be available for people supporting small children and those lacking confidence in beginner stages of swimming lessons and other pool-based activities where more support may be needed.
Designs for the main pool have also been changed to introduce seating for up to 39 people during swimming club sessions and events. This seating will only be available for use during events and galas and will supplement the viewing for up to 60 people in the café/viewing area which overlooks both pools.
To address comments received from squash players about the temperature of the courts, a number of push button heaters will be installed which court users can activate as players warm up. New flooring outside the courts and directional signage will also help improve the overall experience for players and spectators.
Some key recurring questions were raised during the consultation including around pool size, green credentials and where customers can go whilst the leisure centre is closed, and you can view the answers to those questions, and others, here.
