Bin sizes

Standard set of bins for households

The majority of homes in the Moorlands have a standard set of three wheeled bins

  • one 240 litre grey bin for recycling mixed materials
  • one 240 litre brown bin for compostable food and garden plant waste
  • one 180 litre blue lidded bin for general rubbish

Bin capacity and sizes

(width x depth x height in cm)

The 140 litre bin is 50 x 56 x 110
The 180 litre bin is 50 x 76 x 110
The 240 litre bin is 58 x 74 x 110

    Different sizes

You can apply to have a larger (240 litre) general rubbish bin if you

    • have five or more people living permanently at your address
    • have two or more babies using disposable nappies
    • have a medical condition which produces additional rubbish

If you apply for a larger  bin on medical grounds you will have to provide proof of your medical condition e.g. a doctor or hospital letter with an explanation of your condition including a description of the additional waste produced.

Smaller (140 litre) bins for recycling or composting are available for single occupiers or small families. We have limited stock of the smaller size and some of the bins are second hand.

If you are swapping your bin for a smaller or larger one please leave the old one accessible so we can remove it when we deliver the new one.

Please make sure you order the correct container as we are unable to offer a refund once the bin is delivered.

    Alternative containers

Some properties are assessed as unsuitable for wheeled bins and use blue sacks for rubbish, a box for recycling, paper sacks for garden plant waste and a caddy for food waste.

Sacks are delivered each year in April / May. We supply enough blue rubbish sacks for you to use up to 4 per fortnight. Paper sacks for garden plant waste can be delivered in bundles of 25 or 50 depending on the size of your garden.

There is no charge for the delivery of recycling boxes, caddies or bags for textiles.

Bins for commercial or business premises

Waste collection is not included in business rates.  If you run a business from your home e.g. bed and breakfast or self catering holiday letting you must arrange a separate commercial collection for waste generated by your business.
