Provision of sandbags
Information on the provision of sandbags and flood defences
The sole responsibility for protection of private property in the event of a flood lies with individual owners/occupiers and not the District Council or any other agency.
Sandbags can be useful in helping to protect your property from flooding but it is important to remember that in some situations the use of sandbags can result in greater damage to your home, as they can trap water inside the property.
There is very useful information on protection of your home on the Environment Agency website.
Householders and Commercial property owners in flood risk areas are encouraged to make their own provision for flood defence and not rely upon the council to defend their property. Businesses are expected to make their own arrangements and will not be supported with the provision of sandbags.
Sandbags will not totally prevent floodwater encroaching into property and householders should remove belongings to a safe location above the anticipated flood level.
