Checkley planning document adopted by Council

Published on 22 July 2024

The Neighbourhood Plan for Checkley has now been 'made' - formally adopted - by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and forms part of the development plan used to determine planning applications in the parish.

The document has been developed by the Parish Council, with support from the District Council, and input from local residents and businesses, community groups, farmers and landowners and statutory consultees.

The Neighbourhood Plan includes policies concerning housing and site allocations, housing mix, Upper Tean high street, rural business diversity and growth, community sport and recreation facilities, local green space, design, residential infill, landscape and rural character, conservation areas and transport.

Neighbourhood Plans are subject to two rounds of public consultation, independent examination and a referendum before they can be adopted. The referendum in Checkley Parish took place on 2 May when over half of those who voted agreed to the Plan being used to determine planning applications as part of the wider Development Plan.

Councillor Darren Price, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Regeneration and Planning at the District Council, said: "Neighbourhood Plans focus on local issues and give the people that live in towns and parishes a real say in how their communities are developed - something that we know is of keen interest to many people.

"Following the referendum in Checkley earlier this year, we at the District Council have now formally adopted the Neighbourhood Plan so it will now be taken into consideration when determining planning applications in the area it covers.

"A great deal of work goes into developing the Plan so I'm sure everyone who participated in developing it, and in consultations and the referendum, will be pleased that they are now officially part of the development plan for the Staffordshire Moorlands."

You can view the documents on the District Council website or see a paper copy at Moorlands House in Leek; The Raddle Inn in Hollington; Great Wood Hall in Upper Tean; and Checkley Community Centre, during normal opening hours.
